We Remember Haiti Event
January 12, 2015 marked the 5th anniversary of the earthquake that occurred in Haiti. The 1199 SEIU workers hosted a day of commemoration. Earlier in the day there was roundtable talks, book signings, and a candle light vigil. I was able to attend the evening portion of the event where there was a big reception, entertainment and testimonies. It was a pleasure to be in a room with Haitians and non-Haitians alike who have such a vested interest in Haiti.
The testimonies were particularly moving, especially from those who were in Haiti when the earthquake occurred or went to Haiti immediately after. For myself, it brought back a lot of memories of when myself and 11 friends went to Haiti, six months after the earthquake, to help. The people that we went to help in Bognotte, and Soucematela, Haiti are both in remote areas. Unless you know someone from there, these people could have easily been forgotten. We worked tirelessly to help them get back on their feet. Not only while we were there, but in the years after as well.
There is a LOT of work to be done in Haiti still but I know with GOD's help and good hearted people who sincerely want to serve, Haiti can once again be the "Pearl of the Antilles."
