Cortelyou C.A.R.E.S Gala
I am constantly amazed by what is happening in my own community! On December 21st, Ariel Metayer (Miss Teen Haiti) and I were invited by Kethsy Jean of Cortelyou C.A.R.E.S to their 3rd Annual Gala at the Dyker Heights Beach Golf Club. We were asked to present Citations to six godly servants of the community.
"Cortelyou C.A.R.E.S helps the members of our community directly! We primarily achieve this by enrolling passionate volunteers that are dedicated in assisting those in need of social services. We provide services such as public assistance, emergency metrocards, immigration form completion, job placement, food stamps, W.I.C., Medicaid process assistance and more. We host Community health fairs , workshops and parenting classes as well as partner with outreach relief programs such as domestic violence, homeless shelters and public school Parent Teacher Coordinators to help tutor and provide for clients in need."
On this evening citations were given to six pillars of the community. These unsung heroes are people, who out of their own means, provide for the less fortunate in their community. Whether it's working with tweens or domestic violence victims, these local heroes have extended themselves in ways that have made a huge impact not only in their community, but also to those on the outside looking in. I know that many (including myself), like to focus on the needs of outside countries but I tip my hat to those who are making an impact right here in our city.
I met Kethsy (Pastor Diane's sister) and Pastor Diane (Pastor of Cortelyou Road Church of God) in the room where the models were getting ready. They were both very sweet and welcoming, making sure that we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Meeting Pastor Diane was enlightening for me. Pastor Diane, who is Haitian, is the lead pastor of the Cortelyou Church of God. I have never met a Haitian female senior pastor before! I am sure there are many but for me it was definitely a first. Pastor Diane is beautiful, eloquent and magnanimous. It is always a pleasure to meet strong women who make a difference.
