The Haiti Trauma Project NYC Fundraiser
I always get excited when young Haitians give back to Haiti. Last night I attended an intimate fundraiser held by The Haiti Trauma Project. The founder, Florence Saint-Jean is someone I connected with on twitter and coincidentally met up with at the EHN Teacher's Summer Institute in Croix De Bouquets. Florence is a Doctoral candidate at Duquesne University doing her research on psychological trauma, specifically in the Haitian population.
The Haiti Trauma Project coordinates with doctoral students and faculty, as well as professionals in a training program of culturally-competent and trauma-informed curriculum consisting of basic counseling techniques that can be conducted by professionals such as teachers, doctors, nurses, and religious leaders. They also throw a holiday party for over 350 children!
I know that I personally was drawn to Florence when I met her but it was more than evident that the children, workers, and staff love and appreciate her as wel, based on the reception Florence received upon on her arrival to the HAC compound in Haiti.
Last night was simple, yet beautiful. There was a silent auction, food, drinks, and lots of networking.
I was touched that she asked me to speak at her event
